From there, twelve weekly roundtrip sailings serve six neighbor-island ports. Those include Kahului on Maui, Nawiliwili on Kauai, Hilo and Kawaihae on the Big Island, plus Molokai and Lanai.
One quirk worth knowing: everything routes through Honolulu. A Kauai-to-Maui move sails to Oahu first, transfers, then continues. That makes Oahu the best-case starting point for any inter-island move. Your belongings travel in a container loaded on this side, secured for the crossing, and opened at the destination port.
The Timeline Nobody Explains
The sailings themselves are short. Honolulu to Kahului is an overnight run. Cargo is typically available the next business day after the barge lands. The part that needs planning is everything around the sailing. Containerized shipments need a reservation, generally two weeks ahead. Summer peak season can also put household goods in line behind other freight. Book the barge leg early. Then build the rest of the move around a confirmed sailing instead of hoping a date opens up.
Packing for a Sea Crossing
A barge container gets salt air, humidity, and motion. Inter-island packing borrows from ocean-move standards rather than across-town ones. Furniture gets wrapped against moisture. Can you ship a car between islands?
Yes. Vehicles ride the same barges, with their own drop-off windows and paperwork. If a car is part of your move, reserve its spot when you book the household container. Vehicle space tightens in peak season.
Is it cheaper to sell everything and rebuy on the new island?
